Young people have distinctive pathways into and experience of homelessness, including having limited coping strategies and resources as well as being at high risk of further trauma, according to new research from the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI).

Large numbers of renting households, estimated to include somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million Australians aged 15 and above, are perhaps only one life shock away from homelessness, whether that’s a relationship breakup, getting a serious illness or losing work due to economic circumstances such as what happened during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, new AHURI research has revealed.

A COVID induced pivot to a completely virtual event was an appropriate backdrop for the hosting of AHURI’s National Cities Conference, ‘Uncharted urban futures: Australian cities post pandemic’ last Thursday 19 November.
